About Us
Legal Assistance Program
For over three decades, the National Whistleblower Legal Defense and Education Fund has sponsored free legal assistance programs for climate whistleblowers. The Fund’s primary goal is to help connect whistleblowers with private sector attorneys to provide them with leading representation. The Fund accepts intakes from both government and private sector whistleblowers, and reviews cases concerning climate, retaliation, qui tam, and lawsuits filed under the Dodd-Frank Act, among numerous other laws.
Stephen M. Kohn
Stephen M. Kohn is one of the nation’s leading whistleblower attorneys. A founding director of the NWC, he is the author of eight books on whistleblower law, including The New Whistleblower’s Handbook: A Step-by-Step Guide to Doing What’s Right and Protecting Yourself (Lyons Press, 3rd Edition 2017).
He is a practicing whistleblower attorney and serves pro bono as the Chairman of the Board of the National Whistleblower Center. Stephen is a partner in the whistleblower law firm Kohn, Kohn & Colapinto. His primary litigation focus includes representing international whistleblowers under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, tax fraud whistleblowers, qui tam reward laws, the False Claims Act, SEC whistleblowers and IRS whistleblowers. In 2012, the firm obtained the largest qui tam whistleblower reward given to a single individual in history ($104 million to UBS whistleblower Bradley Birkenfeld) and he represents Danske Bank Whistleblower Howard Wilkinson.
Michael Kohn
Since 1985 Michael D. Kohn has successfully represented whistleblowers in numerous whistleblowers in qui tam and retaliation cases against the nation’s largest corporations and law firms, including Georgia Power Company, Brown & Root and Ashland Oil Company. Michael is a partner in the whistleblower law firm Kohn, Kohn & Colapinto. He represented the False Claims Act whistleblower in the first successful mortgage-fraud qui tam arising out of the 2008 market crash, Harris v. J.P Morgan. His primary litigation focus includes representing international whistleblowers under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, tax fraud whistleblowers, qui tam reward laws, the False Claims Act, SEC whistleblowers and IRS whistleblowers. In 2012, the firm obtained the largest qui tam whistleblower reward given to a single individual in history ($104 million to UBS whistleblower Bradley Birkenfeld).
David Colapinto
A nationally recognized Qui Tam litigator, Colapinto is one of the founders of the National Whistleblower Center and serves as its General Counsel. He specializes in Qui Tam/False Claims Act, Dodd-Frank Act, and IRS whistleblower claims. He was lead counsel for the whistleblower in the qui tam action against Bristol-Myers Squibb, helping to recover more than $500 million for U.S. taxpayers in one of the most important pharmaceutical whistleblower case filed under the False Claims Act. As co-counsel in the Bradley Birkenfeld case, he won the largest ever tax whistleblower award ($104 million). He is the co-author of Whistleblower Law: A Guide to Legal Protections for Corporate Employees.
Mary Jane Wilmoth
Mary Jane Wilmoth joined the National Whistleblower Center as a Public Interest Law Fellow in 1993. A highly effective whistleblower attorney, she served as co-counsel in the nuclear whistleblower case Hobby v. Georgia Power Co., where the presiding judge noted Ms. Wilmoth “brought significant specialized knowledge” to the case and “demonstrated skill and experience.” Hobby v. Georgia Power Co., Case No. 90-ERA-30 D&O.
Ms. Wilmoth is now NWC’s Chief Financial Officer, where she also serves as the corporate secretary. She has advocated for whistleblowers for over twenty years. In addition to her position as an attorney, Ms. Wilmoth developed the NWC’s internet presence and has overseen NWC’s website. She has also served as a leader of the NWC’s highly successful public advocacy programs, which have resulted in major legislation and policies advancing whistleblower rights.
Siri Nelson
Siri Nelson is the Executive Director of the National Whistleblower Center. Nelson served as an Associate Attorney and Policy Counsel at Kohn, Kohn and Colapinto, the nation’s leading whistleblower law firm, where she worked closely with anonymous whistleblowers, legislators, and regulators.
Nelson was the recipient of the highly prestigious and competitive Estelle S. Kohn Memorial Fellowship awarded by Northeastern University School of Law and was elected to be the Commencement Speaker for her Class at Northeastern University School. She graduated summa cum laude from the College of New Rochelle, School of New Resources, with a B.A. in Liberal Arts focused on the Social Sciences.
Nelson has been published in Columbia’s Blue Sky Blog and The National Law Review. She also serves as an Editor & Legislative Correspondent at Whistleblower Network News.
